Domain Lifecycle Explained

1. Active Period

  • The domain is registered and fully functional

  • Websites, email, and DNS services operate normally

  • The domain can be renewed at any time during this period

2. Expiration Date

  • Occurs when the registration period ends

  • Website and email services may stop functioning

  • The domain enters a post-expiration grace phase

3. Grace Period

  • Typically lasts 0–45 days, depending on the domain extension

  • Domain can usually be renewed at the standard renewal price

  • Services may be temporarily suspended

4. Redemption Period

  • Usually lasts 30 days after the grace period

  • Domain is removed from the DNS zone

  • Recovery is possible but requires an additional redemption fee

5. Pending Deletion

  • Lasts approximately 5 days

  • The domain cannot be renewed or recovered

  • After this stage, the domain becomes publicly available for registration
